The Student Union and the Student Center are an integral part of the institution’s educational environment. They provide a range of activities, out-of-class programs, learning experiences, and personal guidance essential to the development of intellectual growth, leadership, social, cultural, physical, and ethical values and skill development.
The Union and Center enhances the academic mission of the university by engaging students in educational experiences beyond the classroom and by linking them to programs, leadership opportunities, career resources, cultural art exhibits and opportunities for personal and professional growth.
The Union and Center are student-centered and engage and employ students in visible and meaningful ways, to enrich the learning experience of student involvement. The Union and Center serve as a unifying force in the University community, cultivating traditions, mutual respect and loyalty to the University and providing an environment to interact both formally and informally.
The Student Union Phase I was opened on September 20, 1959. Until 1952, Student Union facilities had been combined with the women's dormitory in Libbey Hall, which had been built in 1935. Although resident women moved into MacKinnon Hall in 1952, the old building was still inadequate. In 1955, a student committee - The Campus 100 - gathered data and campaigned vigorously for a new building to replace the outmoded Libbey Hall. Seeing the need and catching the enthusiasm of the committee, students voted to assess themselves to build a new Union.
After the first $100,000 was raised, a $900,000 loan was negotiated with the Federal Housing and Home Financing Agency. Ground was broken for the new building on February 26, 1958, and cornerstone laying ceremonies were held in September.
On April 24, 1967, the students, once again, met with the University Architect to begin planning for the Phase II addition to the Student Union. This addition was to increase the size of the Student Union building by 70,000 square feet at a cost of $2.7 million. As with the initial planning, students were actively involved. The ground breaking ceremonies were held on October 2, 1970, with completion scheduled for September, 1972. The dedication of Phase II of the Student Union was held November 15, 1972.
The latest addition and renovation to the Student Union cost $8 million and increased the size of the Student Union by 48,000 square feet, an increase of 20%. The addition included a new bookstore, food court, conference and meeting rooms. The renovated areas increased the space for student organizations by 25, adapted space for Multicultural Student Development Center, expanded Career Services and revitalized office space. Dedication ceremonies were held on April 6, 1994.
